Angelika Markul (CH) | Parole d'insecte / Insect's word

SYNOPSIS

After the rather sober tone of Angelika Markul’s previous video installations exhibited at, among other places, the Museum of Modern Art– the Castello di Rivoli – in Torino and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, her second personal show is characterized by a return to a set that is more directly narrative in style. Parole d'insecte invites the viewers to explore the artist’s imagination and leads them into an almost dream-like world made up of both elements from the artist’s own experience and from the collective consciousness. Following in the tracks of Skola nr 17, the artist again takes great pleasure in mixing mediums and languages to impart an even greater and more penetrating power of suggestion to her work. (...) If the artist has drawn inspiration from the themes that pervade her own childhood memories from Poland, it is not merely to express them; rather, she uses them to evoke the very questions she feels are pertinent today politically and existentially, for herself but also for the world in which she lives. This gives us an interesting combination of folklore and current issues expressed plastically, as well as a rather free adaptation, like that of Urs Fischer of the famous Grimm brothers’ fairytale, Hansel and Gretel. Anne-Laure Stolz (part of the critical issue edited in occasion of the show ‘Parole d'insecte’ in the gallery space Frédéric Giroux in Paris, dec 2006).
